The film opens with Zhao Weijian, a man wrestling with a familiar, crushing reality. He's in the small kitchen, his glasses fogging as he cooks, while his wife’s jarring scream echoes from the living room. It's the everyday now. Five years ago, a car accident shattered their idyllic family. Hong Li, his wife, survived, but her mind is trapped in a body that no longer functions as it should. She's in her early thirties, yet she has symptoms similar to dementia, and shifts between a frightened child and a silent catatonic state. Zhao Weijian is the tireless anchor, constantly spinning, trying to balance his demanding job, a young daughter, and his desperately ill wife. He hires caregivers, but they all are scared away by his wife's unpredictable episodes. The entire burden of their home rests on his shoulders. He is living a life that resembles the legendary "no foot bird," doomed to an endless flight, never able to land, for landing means death. As he watches the love of his life become vacant, forgetting even who he is, Zhao's emotional defenses start to collapse with each passing day. He delicately cleans her and feeds her, hoping for a moment of lucidity, a glimpse of the woman he once loved. But the pressures of life are relentless, and the weight of his devotion is staggering. How long can this despairing guardianship last? In this suffocating home, is love a salvation or just a heavier chain?

The film itself isn't flashy; there are no explosions or melodrama. It's more like a cold scalpel, cutting into the raw, painful reality of middle age. Director Liu Zhaodong's understated style captures this family's struggle in the aftermath of a tragedy. The realism is unsettling because it portrays the everyday, monotonous wear and tear. Qi Yunpeng, as the lead, delivers a powerful performance. You can see the exhaustion, the suppressed grief, and his rare moments of vulnerability in his eyes. It's a masterful portrayal of a man beaten down by life, yet you still sense a flicker of love burning within. Xu Yang, who plays the wife, is equally heartbreaking. Her performance captures that detached, absent state, making the audience empathetic to both her suffering and her husband's desperate situation. The “no foot bird” metaphor runs throughout the film. It's a tribute to their suffering, but also a lament for their unwavering determination. This movie isn't for those seeking easy entertainment, but if you want to witness the brilliance of the human spirit in an unbearable situation, if you want to experience love that is heavy yet true, then I recommend you sit in quiet and prepare your tissues, because this film hits hard. It shows us that sometimes, simply living is the most courageous act of all.
