The plot centers around a faded diary, the symbol of three generations' yearning to return home from across the ocean. Li Wenwen, a young girl, follows her family's footsteps back to Xiamen, a city imbued with the culture of southern Fujian. She is entering the very school her grandfather longed for: Chengyi Middle School. The campus's red-brick buildings and rich history feel both mysterious and foreign to Wenwen, who grew up far from this place. The school is about to restart the Chengyi Lectures, and the drama club is excitedly planning a play about Li Lin, a female anti-Japanese heroine. Xiao Feng, the drama club president, immediately sees Wenwen's heroic face and casts her to play this legendary overseas Chinese heroine. However, the cultural differences and unfamiliarity with this historical role create an immense challenge for Wenwen. How can a young overseas Chinese girl, used to the fast pace of modern life, bridge the gap in time and truly understand a soul who sacrificed her life in the flames of war? The friction during rehearsals, the doubts among her peers, and the heavy expectations in her grandfather's eyes turn the performance into a difficult transformation regarding her own identity.

The film evokes the fresh sea breeze of Xiamen, carrying a gentle nostalgia and the youthful energy unique to teenagers. Its most touching aspect is its subtlety; it avoids didacticism by using the rehearsal of a play-within-a-play to allow two overseas Chinese women from different eras to mentally connect across time. The director Li Yanting is adept at capturing those subtle, true emotions of the campus, whether through the arguments during rehearsal or the figures walking through the ancient school buildings. It reveals a sense of quiet and profound beauty. Ding Qi, who plays Li Wenwen, possesses a charming combination of naivety and resilience. Her transformation, from an outsider to someone fully immersed in the role, really represents the common path of anyone on a search for their roots. The film weaves the city's historical depth and the culture of overseas Chinese into everyday scenes. You'll find that "heritage" isn't a mere slogan on the wall, but instead, it is about how these young people reinterpret those great souls in their own way. It's not just a work about rehearsing a play, it's more like a love letter to the hometown. After watching it, you might feel compelled to dig out your own old family photos and listen to the stories that have been hidden by time.
