The most ruthless aspect of this film is that it dares to tear open the bloody reality for you to see, and then gently applies a colorful bandage to the wound. Director Barbara Wong uses an almost cruel reality to record the ups and downs of a woman in a decade of turmoil. The process of Gigi Leung's eyes extinguishing and reigniting in the scene where she loses her son is simply heartbreaking, completely subverting her previous sweet idol image.
