The film kicks off with the utterly absurd scenario of an undercover cop getting iced because his acting skills were, shall we say, less than convincing. This sets the stage for our protagonist, Chan Man-lung, a police officer who’s, ironically, deemed to have the most dramatic potential in the force. So, the police send him to drama school, and the fun begins. He quickly encounters Shan Dan, a Category III actress played by Charlene Choi, who is desperately trying to break free from her image and find authentic roles. They're both outsiders, each grappling with their own baggage and struggling to find their place in the world of acting. The initial result? Failure, but it is from failure that they find a master, and ultimately learn the true meaning of acting, that it's about "living". The cast! Jim Chim is the obvious standout here. I mean, he's a theatrical master playing a bad actor – it's meta genius. Charlene Choi's performance here is a real breakthrough; she brings a surprising depth and vulnerability to her role, turning what could have been a caricature into a real, breathing person. And, of course, the cameos! It's practically a who's who of Hong Kong cinema.
