This movie is like a glass of ice-cold cola with a dash of mustard. The first sip is refreshing, but then you get that sudden, sharp bite. It perfectly captures that feeling of being alone and invisible in the modern world, the kind of subtle anger that simmers just below the surface. Melanie Lynskey is phenomenal; she nails that sense of middle-aged despair. Elijah Wood delivers one of the most wonderfully neurotic and endearing performances of his career. Macon Blair, the director, clearly has been influenced by his friend Jeremy Saulnier, with violence breaking through the black humour. It's not a traditional heroic tale. It's about a couple of people on the edge. You find it oddly moving that this woman is willing to flip her life upside down just to get her silver spoon back. There's a strange kind of romanticism, and a satisfying catharsis in that act. I’m thinking, this might be a great one for a weekend watch.
