** Right, so *Lupin III: The Fuma Conspiracy* (1987)... it's a bit of an odd duck in the Lupin canon, but in a good way. The thing that jumps out is the sheer audacity of it. Goemon, *Goemon*, the stoic swordsman, is getting married! The Fuma clan crashes the wedding, snatches the bride, and demands a family vase. Cue Lupin, Jigen, and Fujiko to get involved. And Zenigata? Well, he thinks Lupin's dead and he's taken up the cloth, which is just brilliant character work. The plot is simple enough – rescue the bride, retrieve the vase, but the execution... that's where this OVA really shines. What I find most intriguing is the opening. It needs to be jarring. We need to grab the viewer from the start with this image of the almost inhuman Goemon, and his marriage! The kidnappers arrive, masks and all, and snatch the bride in front of everyone. They want the vase. Now, Lupin and Jigen are going to get involved, that's expected. But Zenigata...the monk...that's a masterstroke. The chase is on, and all the elements are present for a classic Lupin adventure. The visuals are top-notch. Otsuka was an animator, and it shows. Think classic hand-drawn animation, remember, like the *best* anime from the 80s: that energy, those car chases...that Cinquecento versus a swarm of police cars? Pure gold. And you *know* that vase is going to be more than just a vase, it's a MacGuffin. **

** Okay, so the elephant in the room is the cast change. Look, I get why some people might bristle at it, but if you can get past that initial shock, the movie delivers. I'd almost tell people, let the visuals carry you, because they are worth the price of admission alone. Otsuka really pushes the animation quality, and it shows. The action is fluid, it's dynamic, and that old-school animation style is something you don't see anymore. It’s got that Miyazaki influence, that attention to detail, that life, in every frame. But the heart of this story? It's Goemon. We always see him as the cold, unflappable swordsman, but here he's got this vulnerability, this burning desire to rescue his love. It humanizes him, makes him more than just a weapon. The pacing is tight, the humor is classic Lupin – a mix of slapstick and clever banter. It’s not trying to be some sprawling epic like some of the later films. It's a return to the roots: a heist, an adventure, a chase with a bit of mystery. I am thinking that this will appeal to you, as someone that will appreciate the combination of art, the visuals and the quality animation. With the Japanese folklore and red autumn leaves, it’s all really beautiful. If you are looking for an action-packed, heartwarming, and truly unique Lupin experience? This one is a hidden gem.
