Director Eric Armstrong is an atmosphere master; he first builds suspense like a Hollywood thriller, and then reveals the truth in an almost cold-humored way. Although it was made over twenty years ago, it is full of visual Easter eggs. If you're a seasoned sci-fi fan, you can spot the echoes of many classic sci-fi films in that bar. Meeper is like every ordinary person who dreams big in an ordinary job; he is clumsy but pure, and the reaction of that purity when faced with an unknown fear is both hilarious and, at the end, satisfying.
