It becomes this intense intellectual battle, this cat-and-mouse game with life or death stakes. The themes, naturally, are complex: justice, morality, this intoxicating god complex, all playing out in a dark, suspenseful, and ultimately psychological way. The tension is the core of it all. The atmosphere is absolutely key. I'm thinking of how to build this tension, this sense of two geniuses, each playing a deadly game of chess, using people as pieces. You really feel the psychological weight of it all.

Thinking about my review, I should mention how exhilarating it is on an intellectual level. The series leaves you asking – is Light a hero, or a monster? The moral ambiguity is fascinating. And "L"… the way the character is so brilliantly constructed. Plus, the pacing has to be mentioned, it is so fast. And of course, Mamoru Miyano's voice acting is phenomenal. You can't help but feel it will leave its mark.
