In the humid, viscous land of the Mekong River, fire is the most dazzling and resolute comfort. Director Bùi Thạc Chuyên’s *Glorious Ashes* is like a ritual quietly burning deep in the water, focusing on a village forgotten by time, and telling the story of how three women step by step move towards self-destruction within suffocating love. The film's main narrative is intertwined with three distinct female characters. The young Hậu, keeps the attention of a distracted husband, whose eyes are always looking past her, towards another married woman. On the other side of the village, Nhàn and her husband live in a kind of obsessive romance and cruelty – the husband is obsessed with arson, repeatedly setting fire to their own house, just to confirm their continued existence in the brief, all-consuming fire. The most heart-wrenching is the woman named Loan, who wanders on the edge of madness and clarity, carrying childhood trauma and trying to pick up dignity in her broken life. These three families are like floating islands on the Mekong River, each longing to be seen, but in the process of longing, they are burned to ashes by that obsession called "love".

Watching this film is like swallowing an ice cube with a rusty taste, the cold is penetrating, but it makes one clear. The director, Bùi Thạc Chuyên, is so skilled at wrapping the hottest emotional conflicts in a restrained, almost cold cinematic language. He doesn't deliberately sensationalize, but captures the soul of the misty water, the decaying vegetation and the humid air of the Mekong Delta, so that one can feel the oppressive feeling of sticky skin and inability to breathe across the screen. The title "Ashes" is used beautifully. In many films, fire represents hope, but here, fire is an outlet for despair. The men's absence, dullness or even cruelty in their emotions force the women to seek even a second of attention in extreme behavior. This love is no longer a warm embrace, but a self-harming sacrifice. This is not just a work about women's dilemmas; it's more like a dirge about loneliness. It tells us that the most terrible poverty is not the lack of material goods, but the desolation of emotions. When a person grows old in the long silence, that dancing flame becomes the only splendid thing in life. If you are tired of those fast-paced industrial candies, and want to see something that really digs into the flesh and blood of life, this film will be like a blunt knife, slowly cutting open the truth about desire and loneliness that we have concealed. The core is the contrast, this raw honesty in a film – unrequited love, the destructive power of obsession, this "fire" within the "water" of the Mekong. It's not a comfortable watch, but it feels necessary, and I'd frame it as something that cuts deeper.
