The scene opens with this thick, humid air of the Indonesian jungle clinging to everything. You can almost smell the sugar factory’s machinery overworking itself. The sudden death of the old master, after a night with the housekeeper, sets the whole thing in motion. The wife, Agathe, immediately tries to cover it up, burying the corpse in the ice. Then, the son and his pregnant wife arrive from the Netherlands, expecting to take control of their inheritance. But this seemingly straightforward inheritance soon falls apart as tensions rise with workers’ strikes, inheritance issues, and the complicated presence of the housekeeper's illegitimate son. The power dynamics are palpable, and the film is satirical and visually striking; it’s a brilliant critique of colonialism. The director uses this really striking aesthetic. The symmetry of the shots, the pastel colors juxtaposed against the brutal reality of the situation... it's like a Wes Anderson film, but darker, far more cynical. It's a dutch-Indonesian co-production, and the Dutch and Indonesian languages being spoken just adds to the sense of cultural clash.

Honestly, the visuals are what hit me first. Sendijarević has this incredibly precise, almost obsessive-compulsive framing style, which amplifies the absurdity of the era. The images are gorgeous, like paintings with a light, fresh, almost candy-like color palette. But peel back that sweet exterior, and you find a rot of power, greed, and the bloody exploitation of the working class. It doesn't lecture, it is a deconstruction of those self-proclaimed "civilized" Dutch aristocrats in their European clothing, sweating buckets in a tropical rainforest. Their awkwardness and cluelessness is much more powerful than any direct condemnation. And the performances... Renée Soutendijk, the lead, is phenomenal. She embodies this aristocratic woman on the verge of total collapse but desperately trying to keep up appearances. This isn't just a historical drama; it's a parable about greed and retribution. The sweetness of the sugar conceals a deadly poison.
