Every night, across the dark waters of Long Island, a tiny green light flickers at the end of a dock, teasing a man who has everything but the one thing he actually wants. That's my starting point. It sets the scene: Long Island in the 1920s, a summer of shimmering excess, the glitz and the glamour. Jazz music spills from Gatsby's mansion, a beacon in the night. He throws these lavish parties, everyone comes, but no one really knows him. Robert Redford – he's the epitome of this golden, enigmatic figure. He's got that look, that charisma… it’s perfect casting. The story unfolds, and we understand that Nick Carraway, who's moved in next door, is drawn into this world. He's Daisy's cousin, and she's entangled in a web with Gatsby and her husband, Tom. There's a secret history, a love that spans five years. It's a triangle of desire and regret, and simmering just below the surface is the tension of Tom's arrogance and Daisy’s vulnerability and Gatsby’s burning hope. And there it is: the turning point, the accident, right? I'll stop there. The full story won't be revealed.

Coppola's screenplay nails it. The costumes, Ralph Lauren, they are perfect. It captures the spirit of Fitzgerald’s novel almost perfectly. The performance by Redford, that's what sticks with me. He embodies Gatsby's dream, that relentless pursuit. He conveys the "golden" quality and the inherent sadness. The film understands that it's not just a love story. It's about a dream that's dead before it even begins, the tragedy of trying to repeat the past. I think it is an excellent piece of work, and that is what I want to convey to the reader.
