The story follows Mei Xiao'ou, played by Bai Baihe. She's a VIP gambling host, a "junket agent," or a 叠码仔. People might go into it expecting a straightforward gambling flick. But what you come away with is a look at a wager for emotions, a 李少红-style gamble. The film captures Macau’s atmospheric qualities – the seductive yet chilling quality. That emptiness behind all of the wealth practically oozes from the screen. Bai Baihe gives a really nuanced performance. You can see the weariness of someone who’s seen too much, but also this innate sense of heroism in her. Wu Gang gives a deeply affecting performance. He captures the subtle way a respectable person can devolve into someone completely consumed by gambling. And with it, you see the loss of all their humanity, their principles. It's not just the money that slips away but their values as well. The film's most potent idea is this harsh truth: men gamble with their lives, but women gamble with their hearts. Mei Xiao'ou has this tragically maternal quality. She thinks she can save these sinking souls, but it just drags her deeper into the abyss.
