Initially, the idea was to start with a powerful visual or a provocative question about the "God of War". I thought, "Who would have thought that the Martial Saint Guan Yu, worshipped on an altar for a thousand years, would show the struggle of a mortal in his tent late at night, staring at a cup of strong liquor mixed with medicine?" The film, directed by the dynamic duo of Alan Mak and Felix Chong, doesn't intend to copy a textbook historical biography. Instead, it focuses on the lone hero trapped in Cao Cao's camp, in a difficult situation. Donnie Yen's Guan Yu is not a stereotyped majestic statue; he is more like an idealist swept up by the torrent of the times. The story's fuse is ignited by Cao Cao's almost obsessive love for talent. Jiang Wen's Cao Cao moves between power plays with an unprecedented sense of ease; he attempts to exchange Guan Yu's loyalty for the stability of the world. In this top-level tug-of-war between men, there is also a variable—Qi Lan, played by Sun Li. She is the moonlight in Guan Yu's heart, but also his nominal sister-in-law. When Cao Cao sets up that forbidden and seductive maze, the Green Dragon Crescent Blade in Guan Yu's hand must not only cut through the enemy's armor, but also cut off the demons in his heart. With the release of Liu Bei's wife, Guan Yu finally embarks on a return journey destined to be bloody. Crossing five passes and slaying six generals is not only a limit break of physical strength, but also a cruel trial of faith. The spear duel in the narrow alley, the life-and-death struggle in the fog—Donnie Yen pulls the tension of that trapped beast fighting to the full. With each pass, the blood on Guan Yu's body becomes heavier, and he seems to be farther and farther away from that pure Martial Saint dream.

The most interesting thing about this film is that it deconstructs that well-known Three Kingdoms story from a modern workplace or even psychological warfare perspective. Jiang Wen's Cao Cao is the soul of the whole film; he plays a warlord with the humor and domineering of a chief executive officer; every line is like a scalpel, precisely cutting open the false shell of so-called loyalty and righteousness. Watching him seriously trying to bluff Guan Yu is more exciting than the action scenes. Donnie Yen's action design still maintains a very high standard, especially the mechanical combat in that narrow space; the sound of metal collision seems to be roaring in the ear. But compared to the fighting, I am more fascinated by the feeling of the tearing between the divinity and humanity of Guan Yu. He wants to be a pure righteous man, but reality forces him to become a killing machine with blood on his hands. The film does not make him an invincible god, but makes him sweat, bleed, and even show a desire for forbidden emotions; this mortal breath instead makes the character warm. Although the plot seems a bit raw in handling the emotional line, and even makes traditional Three Kingdoms fans feel a little confused and a little altered, if you regard it as a hard-boiled action film in a historical setting, its quality is definitely up to standard. It tries to tell us that the so-called heroes are often not born with brilliance, but a lonely bloody road that they force out in countless desperate situations when they want to look back but have no way. If you are tired of those great and glorious epics and want to see a more down-to-earth and tangled Guan Er, this one is definitely worth spending two hours to savor.
