A cold, azure light pierces the darkness, the sound of colossal steel gears grinding fills the two-thousand-square-meter space. It’s not the scene of a science fiction film, but a real arena for the trials of the brave. Each person who enters this forest of light and shadow, faces not an imaginary foe, but the soul inside their body that yearns to retreat. In this work named "Yongzhe Wudi 2012," Wang Lele and Wang Lu take on the role of judges, guiding challengers from all walks of life towards the seven suffocating extreme challenges. It’s not just a physical contest, but a gamble of will. Some challenges demand snap decisions in milliseconds, while others require that you find one-in-ten-thousand balance on a violently shaking fulcrum. You'll see ordinary faces, that when stepping onto the race track, their eyes explode with unprecedented wildness. Some slip at the last moment of reaching the summit, while others complete incredible leaps on the edge of despair. This most primitive impulse intertwined with the most modern technological stage art, causes every second of breath-holding to become especially heavy. You can never guess how the next challenger will amaze the audience, or leave the stage with regret.

If there is a soul to an athletic competition, then the soul of this work must be hidden in the challengers' rapid breathing. It completely breaks the soft entertainment model, pushing the most real, most brutal and most hot-blooded competition directly in front of the audience, just like a modern version of the Spartan Warrior selection. What touches me the most isn't the final outcome, but the singular courage of knowing you're going to fail, but doing it anyway. The stage lights are cold like blades, but precisely contrast the heat of the human body. Wang Lele and Wang Lu's commentary expertly handles the audience's adrenaline, making each challenge feel like a miniature film filled with dramatic tension. It’s not just showcasing muscle and skill, but seems to ask every ordinary person sitting in front of the screen: if you were standing on the cliff under that spotlight, would you have the courage to take that step? This kind of cross-temporal resonance, makes this over ten year old work, still have a burning vitality when viewed today. It is a shot in the arm to cure mediocre life, making people want to open the door after watching, and meet their own challenge.
