Then, just when the "Musang King" is ripe for the picking and the taste of new love is on the horizon, Jin Shui strolls back into the picture after all this time. It’s got all the makings of a really messy, funny, and deeply touching showdown between old obligations and new beginnings. I see this film and it’s like the Singaporean cinematic “Iron Triangle” of Jack Neo, Mark Lee, and Henry Thia back in action, and the chemistry between them is as sharp and distinctive as a durian's thorn. It uses the durian as a symbol for life itself: rough on the surface, but rich and intricate underneath. And Yeo Yann Yann, she's amazing; she grounds the whole film with her performance, making you feel every ounce of a woman's sacrifice. It's really a comedy, you know, one that makes you laugh at all the arguing, but then it hits you with a heavy dose of real-life about family and forgiveness. It feels like a warm, comforting meal with old friends – no airs, a bit untidy maybe, but incredibly satisfying and filling.
