Picture this: It starts in a cluttered, dusty New York bookstore, reeking of old paper, where two men, far from the stereotypical "sexy" image, are hatching a scheme that would likely stop any passerby in their tracks. One is a dour, taciturn florist's assistant. The other, the owner of a second-hand bookstore facing closure, is a motormouth of a man. Adjusting his thick-rimmed glasses, he proposes in all seriousness: since we're both on the brink of bankruptcy, why not you become a gigolo, and I'll be your agent? And so, the most unconventional "pimp" and "escort" duo in cinema history is born. Fioravante, played by John Turturro, has a name that evokes a romantic Italian poet, but in reality, he's just a gardener who’s not much of a talker, his hands always covered in soil. Woody Allen, plays himself – the ever-anxious, chatterbox strategist. They thought it was just a farcical trade to make ends meet, but their first client turns out to be a glamorous Sharon Stone. As their business grows, Fioravante finds himself navigating the desires of passionate wealthy women and lonely socialites. But when he encounters a Jewish widow, living under strict religious codes, whose eyes are filled with sadness, this initially absurd farce suddenly turns into an unexpectedly tender drama.

This film feels like a glass of aged whiskey poured on an autumn afternoon. It's got a slightly bitter first taste, but the aftertaste carries a warm, delightful richness. Although the title might sound a bit shallow, even a little bit suggestive, it's actually an extremely elegant, even melancholic, urban piece. Seeing Woody Allen earnestly promoting his old friend is comedy gold, and brings me back to the golden days of his New York film roots. What's really moving is that it doesn't portray "escorting" as vulgar; instead, it captures the sense of soul-soothing. John Turturro's face, etched with wrinkles and a touch of melancholy, exudes an old-school gentlemanly charm on camera. He's not selling his body; he's more like trying to heal withered hearts in a bustling city. Especially his scenes with Vanessa Paradis – there’s not a hint of explicit portrayal, but the restraint and emotion that comes from being on the edge of the forbidden is made very well. It's a fairy tale for adults. It shows us that no matter how hard life gets, no matter how old we become, the yearning for warmth within us never fades. The jazz music and warm yellow hues in the film create a New York with a genuine human touch. If you are looking for a thought-provoking yet easy to watch film, look at these two old men doing high-wire acts between refinement and absurdity, and this piece will definitely surprise you.
