In an era before parachutes, ascending into battle was essentially signing a death warrant. The sky was no longer a symbol of romance but a slaughterhouse filled with the smell of oil, icy air currents, and deadly bullets. This is the world that "Flyboys" transports us to in 1917. A group of young men from all over America, escaping their homes for various reasons, crossed the ocean to France and joined the legendary Lafayette Escadrille. Among them was a down-on-his-luck cowboy who had lost his family ranch, a wealthy scion seeking to clear his family's shame, and even a black boxer who was discriminated against in his homeland and longed to prove his dignity in a foreign land. Under the guidance of a stern instructor played by Jean Reno, these novices, who had barely touched an airplane, had to learn in a very short time how to pilot those fragile toys made of wood and canvas to confront Germany's top ace pilots. The whole movie focuses on these young men, known as the Knights of the Air, wearing heavy leather jackets, with long scarves fluttering in the wind, engaging in a life-and-death struggle in the clouds. However, as one comrade after another turned into a falling fireball in the sky, the initial fervor gradually cooled by the cruel reality. Each takeoff might be the last farewell, and they had to find the strength to push the control stick again between fear and responsibility.

The most moving aspect of this film is its capture of the romance and solemnity of the early days of the Industrial Revolution. It doesn't portray war as a cold digital game, but through each roaring rotary engine, each trembling wing canvas, it makes you feel the tension of the life-or-death situation. James Franco's face, with a hint of roguishness and filled with determination, perfectly embodies the process of a young man's transformation from confusion to awakening. Director Tony Bill is obviously a die-hard fan of flying, and he makes the air combat scenes extremely dynamic. Unlike the modern beyond-visual-range combat of jet fighters, the air combat of that era was close-quarters combat, a life-and-death game where you could see the opponent pilot's eyes. The colors in the film are saturated and full of texture. The golden sunset shines on the damaged wings. The interweaving of the hero's twilight and the youthful spirit is so beautiful that it breaks your heart. Although this looks like a typical hardcore war movie, at its core, it carries an ultimate pursuit of dignity and friendship. Especially when the lion, as the mascot, appears in the camp, you will be deeply moved by the camaraderie of those who find joy in hardship. It's not just about flying; it's also about how a group of people, in the darkest of times, seek the freedom of their souls by soaring into the sky. If you crave a screen adventure filled with adrenaline and a touch of classical romance, this old biplane is definitely worth boarding.
