In the martial arts world of the 1960s, where heroes competed with internal energy and solemn faces, there suddenly emerged such a freak. He possessed neither world-class martial arts skills, nor any sense of righteousness, instead, he had the words "greedy for money, lustful, and timid as a mouse" written on his forehead. This was Chen Ziyuan, a small character, one you'd expect to run away at any second, yet he stumbled by happenstance into a life-or-death situation that would decide the fate of the martial world. While various masters were desperately fighting over a martial arts manual, even at the cost of decades of seclusion and training, what Chen Ziyuan held in his hand was not a divine weapon, but his precise understanding of human weaknesses. He was like a loach weaving through the marketplace of fame and fortune, and whenever deadly sword lights came slashing towards him, he was always able to dodge them with the most comical posture, and then conveniently dig a pit for those arrogant masters. Who would have thought that this guy, who even trembled when holding a sword, would, by relying on a kind of perverse trickery and bursting luck, gradually approached the coveted position of alliance leader. In this absurd martial arts world, he was like a demon-reflecting mirror, making those so-called prestigious and righteous sects unable to hide their true forms.

When watching this film, I couldn't help but think of the later Wei Xiaobao, and I could even capture some of Stephen Chow's nonsensical shadows from this deconstruction of the martial arts genre. Director Wang Tianlin was really a genius; in an era when martial arts films emphasized hard hits, family and national sentiments, he actually dared to make such a work full of self-mockery and deconstruction. It was simply like throwing a smoke bomb into the serious martial arts world. The character of Chen Ziyuan was brought to life by Tian Qing; his contrast of being both lecherous and clever, and cowardly but wise, made audiences used to seeing great heroes feel an inexplicable exhilaration. The most wonderful part of this movie is that it tells us that the most superior martial arts are often not the moves, but the psychological warfare of seeing through people's hearts. Those arrogant masters often fail due to their own arrogance and greed, and Chen Ziyuan, the neurotic knife, is precisely the needle that punctures the balloon. It is not just an action comedy that makes people laugh out loud; it is more like a playful mockery of the traditional chivalrous spirit. If you're tired of those upright heroes and want to see how an ordinary small-time hoodlum manages to ascend in the midst of blood and wind, then this old movie will definitely amaze you. The sense of humor and avant-garde awareness that transcends time, even when viewed today, still exudes an unpretentious spirit.
