The sunlight streams into a clean kitchen, the aroma of coffee mixes with the laughter of children - a typical morning in a British household. Tom and Nicola are reveling in the joy of their upcoming second child, until a sudden flu-like symptom shatters the peace. No one could have predicted that this seemingly minor ailment was, in fact, the harbinger of a nightmare called sepsis. Within hours, Tom's body becomes a battlefield ravaged by the virus. To save his life, he's forced to accept a near-cruel bargain: the amputation of his limbs and part of his face. When he awakens from the hospital bed, the broken shell in the mirror is unrecognizable compared to the once-vibrant husband and father. The film doesn't stop at the harrowing surgery; instead, it trains the lens on the post-operative wasteland. The astronomical medical bills weigh like a mountain, a newborn baby needs care, and Tom, who was once the breadwinner, now struggles to pour himself a glass of water. Nicola must not only hold this faltering family together but also confront her husband's dramatic change under the dual blows of physical and psychological trauma. In this war where no shots are fired, they are not only looking for the possibility of survival but also for the love that has been crushed by the hardships. Will they manage to put it back together?

This film, much like its title "Starfish", embodies a near-cruel vitality of life. Starfish have the ability to regenerate their limbs, but for a mortal in flesh and blood, this regeneration is often accompanied by the flaying and twitching of the soul. Tom Riley's performance is absolutely transformative; he masterfully captures every subtle tremor of a man from the collapse of dignity to desperate struggles, as well as his attempt to find an exit in the darkness. What moves me most isn't the bloody surgical details; it's the director's restrained portrayal of the mundane. The silent breakdowns in the dead of night, the powerlessness when facing the fearful gaze of their children - these are more devastating than any sentimental soundtrack. It doesn't take the cheap inspirational route; it tells you, bluntly, that life will sometimes hammer you for no reason, crushing the happiness you thought was your due. It's not just a medical drama. It's a test of love, and the "starfish" metaphor resonates deeply. No saccharine sentimentality. The makeup, the prosthetics... hauntingly real. When you finish watching, you realize this film delves into an extreme question: when a person's appearance, abilities, even basic physiological functions, are stripped away, what remains of that core that's called the self? It's a mirror reflecting human fragility, but also the resilience that blooms even in the darkest despair. If you've been feeling life is dull lately or are going through a low point, this film is like a wakeup call, causing you to reexamine the most precious, everyday things we often overlook. The emotional resonance is what matters. It's gritty, it makes you value the "boring" parts of life. Perfect. Let's send it.
