」 Honestly, after watching this, the most immediate feeling is this long-lost, pure Hong Kong gangster film flavor, but it grows in the humid air of a small Southern Chinese city. Meng Yuan, the director, is brilliant at storytelling through visuals. The overall tone of the film is gloomy and intense, and every frame is like an old photo soaked in old times, rendering the sense of being forced by the underworld fate to the extreme. The chemistry between lead actors Hong Junjia and Yuan Baizihui is amazing. Their relationship isn't a sweet romance, it's a pull with a bloody scent. Hua Qing's forbearance and Li Yu's determination intertwine, making people feel a pang of sadness when they see them scheming against each other. Especially the tension of wanting to get close but having to raise a knife is handled both restrained and flamboyant. What is most surprising is the deconstruction of the underworld. It doesn't mythologize the fighting and killing, but focuses the camera on betrayal and loneliness. The seemingly strategic strategist is actually the most twisted epitome of power and desire. This movie uses an almost cruel aesthetic to tell us that the "Jianghu" is not about fighting and killing. The "Jianghu" is about human relationships and, more importantly, those unchangeable regrets. It really feels like a classic HK gangster film, but with a modern Mainland indie soul.
