A boundless field of red sorghum, rippling like a sea of fire in the wind. A near-barbaric, original vitality pulses from it, as though the air itself carries the pungent aroma of strong liquor. This is the first shock Zhang Yimou's debut film delivered to the world. It begins with an absurd marriage; nineteen-year-old Jiu'er is sold by her father for a mule to a leper who runs a liquor workshop. Within the red sedan chair, which sways dizzyingly, Jiu'er's life is thrown into the unknown. The men carrying the sedan chair, Yu Zhan'ao, have the raw toughness of iron. He saves Jiu'er, who's been ambushed, using a nearly crude method on the road of despair. The encounter in the sorghum field isn't gentle, it's about sweat, red soil, and the burning desire of fire. With the bizarre death of her leper husband, Jiu'er not only takes over the workshop filled with the aroma of liquor, she also welcomes her own era. But just as these people, who live vibrantly on this red land, celebrate life with the Eighteen Red Liquor, the shadow of war descends like a dark cloud. Those men, who previously only knew how to drink, work, and frolic in the sorghum fields, now face a cruel choice. As blood stains the sorghum, that touch of red becomes more than just joyous, it takes on a thrilling tragedy.

If movies had personalities, this film would be a Northwest man with a bristly beard, drinking heartily, shirtless and shouting under the sun. Zhang Yimou pushes the Chinese will to live to its limit with a nearly obsessive use of red. You'd be hard-pressed to find such pure, aggressive color aesthetics in any other film. The field of red sorghum isn't just a backdrop, it's a silent witness, watching these people flourish like summer flowers and die like autumn leaves on the land. The performances of Jiang Wen and Gong Li are a perfect match. Jiang Wen at that time, his untamed vitality nearly spills off the screen; while the young Gong Li, under her seemingly frail exterior, hides a spirit as resilient as wild grass. Their interplay has no artifice, only the collision of raw emotion, like a deep-seated battle of souls. It's not just a film about resisting the Japanese; it's more like a rhapsody dedicated to land and life. It shows that in that turbulent era, dignity and love can be so hot and resolute. When you see the final, blood-red world shrouded by the solar eclipse, hearing the shrill and powerful sound of the suona, you'll find that some spirits can never be harvested. This film is like that strong bowl of Eighteen Red; the first sip is pungent and irritating, but the aftertaste is unforgettable.
