The man, Shigeo Omori, has just been released from prison. He gets beaten up, loses his memory, and is taken in by Kasumi, the band's quirky manager. She names him "Pochi", like a pet. They call him Pochi because he's a tiny guy. The band's lead singer gets injured, so she makes a bold decision and puts this silent, almost feral man on stage. And so, in this run-down venue called "Misono Universe," a memoryless tough guy transforms into the center of attention. He's singing his heart out in a shabby shirt, fueled by alcohol and sweat. Those melodies sound like he's trying to piece together a fragmented soul, and it's captivating. The tension begins to build as his past catches up to him. His hard-won peace is threatened, and the music becomes the focal point.

Thinking about this movie again, Subaru Shibutani's performance is the undeniable highlight. His voice... it's not polished, it's not perfect, but it's raw, powerful, and deeply sincere. It feels like it's coming from a place far deeper than the surface. It's a performance that stays with you. Yamashita does a masterful job capturing the romance of the marginalized, he beautifully captures the gritty, bustling, and friendly atmosphere of Osaka. And then there's Kasumi, played by Fumi Nikaido. She provides a bright contrast to the male lead's darkness. Their relationship isn't typical; it's less about romantic love, more about a mutual warmth in a desolate environment. The movie's brilliance lies in its honesty. Music isn't presented as a magic cure-all, it doesn't solve everything, but it exposes the grittiness of reality, and it lets the viewer know that a song can help you raise your head even in the worst situations. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by life, or felt lost in the middle of the night, this movie will provide you a moment of clarity. It's a bit like a strong drink. The beginning is harsh, but there's a warm feeling that makes the experience worthwhile.
